Indonesia earthquake death toll rises to 11 News

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Rescuers on the Indonesian island of Sumatra retrieved more bodies on Sunday from a powerful earthquake two days earlier, raising the death toll to 11 while 400 others were injured and thousands displaced.

The body of the latest victim was recovered from the rubble of houses destroyed by the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit West Sumatra province on Friday morning, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Abdul-Mahari said.

He said six people were killed in Basaman district and five others in neighboring West Basaman district. Rescuers are still searching for four villagers believed to be buried under tons of mud that fell from the surrounding hills in Bukit Lintang village in Pasaman.

Mahari said nearly 400 people were injured in the quake, which was felt as far away as Malaysia and Singapore, and about 42 people were still receiving treatment.

Al-Mahari said more than 13,000 people have fled their homes to temporary shelters, and more than 1,400 homes and buildings have been damaged.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 270 million people, is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines that arch the Pacific Ocean.

The last major earthquake of magnitude 6.2 was in January 2021, when at least 105 people were killed and nearly 6,500 injured in West Sulawesi province. A powerful earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004 killed nearly 230,000 people in more than a dozen countries, mostly in Indonesia.
