4.0-magnitude earthquake shakes California’s Ventura County

An earthquake hit Southern California on Saturday evening.

ABC affiliate KABC reports that the USGS measured the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake, which was about 16 miles deep, struck about 6 miles northwest of Santa Paula in Ventura County, while also shook various parts of Los Angeles County.

“Both are too deep for Southern California,” seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter. “Extremely deep earthquakes will be felt in a different pattern than shallow earthquakes,” Jones wrote. “If you enter your feeling report, we’ll get more data to compare deep to shallow earthquakes.”

Authorities at the Los Angeles County Police Station in Los Angeles tweeted about the quake, writing, “We felt a rumble at the station. We have no reports of any damage or injuries in our area.”

Officials believe the quake was felt on Saturday as far south as Long Beach and as far west as Santa Barbara.

“Based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any significant damage, but it may have been felt by many people as a slight shaking in the epicenter area,” the USGS said in a report.
