A 2.0-magnitude earthquake was reported in Lake Erie on Sunday

CLEVELAND – The United States Geological Survey reported a 2.0-magnitude earthquake about 2.4 miles northwest of Leclen, Ohio, on Sunday.

The earthquake was reported about 1.8 miles below Lake Erie.

There have been eight confirmed earthquakes in Lake Erie this year, according to the US Geological Survey.

Feb 27 – 2.0 NW Licklin 4 – Magnitude 2.4 NW Timberlake 1 – 1.6 earthquake. The earthquake that measured northwest Timberlake was a magnitude 29 – 2.0 earthquake northwest of Willwick Gan. Magnitude 27-2.5 quake NW Leachline Magnitude 27-2.1 quake NW Leachline Magnitude 5-1.9 quake north of Timberlake 4 – Magnitude 2.8 earthquake NW Timberlake

“Seismic activity of 2.5 and above can generally be felt,” Ohio Department of Natural Resources Information Officer David Rohrbach told News 5 previously. “This is a known epicenter of natural earthquakes, given the area’s geological history. Seismologists from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources continue to monitor seismic activity.”

There’s a reason the earthquakes are all in Lake County, near the cities of Eastlake and Timberlake.

“We are right here in the middle of what is known as a tectonic plate here in northeastern Ohio. The edges of our plates are in the mid-Atlantic and over in California and Washington. So earthquakes are less common in this part of the country than elsewhere,” said Stephen Hooke, professor of dynamics Planets at Case Western Reserve University The earthquakes we’ll see here are often caused by faults, discontinuities, and plains in the Earth’s crust where it has been fractured in the past.
