Historic Stratford Bells re-housed after bell tower demolition

The bell tower in the War Memorial Center parking lot is being demolished later this month.

This is because of the risks they pose to public safety in the event of an earthquake.

The seismic assessment of the bell tower found it to be a significant earthquake hazard, and the council was faced with two options – strengthening or demolition.

Stratford County Council members discussed options as part of the 2021-2031 Long Term Plan process, and felt that the cost of the reinforcement as well as the increase in ongoing maintenance costs was too great.

Since public safety is the main driver for assessing the future of the tower, it was decided that removing the tower completely was the best option.

While the tower structure will be dismantled and removed, the bells will be preserved and safely stored until a new home is built for them.

The bells from the tower originally came from the old clock tower of the Broadway Post Office.

The clock tower and the old bells are erected as memorials to the fallen Stratford soldiers in the Boer War (1899-1902) and World War I (1914-1918). In 1987, after being neglected for 20 years, the bells were installed in the bell tower on Miranda Street.

The area in which the tower is currently located has developed significantly over time.

Prior to the 1950s, Miranda Street was home to the area’s market stalls and horse bazaar that stretched from the southern section of the Stratford County Council Building to where the War Memorial and Cross of Sacrifice Center now stands (built 1953 and updated in 1995).

Mayor Neil Volzke says the council is aware that the decision to remove the bell tower may come as a disappointment to some, but that ongoing public safety is at the forefront of that decision.

“We are convinced that the historic bells, which the tower was originally built to house, will be better displayed elsewhere for all to enjoy. Currently you can’t see the bells because they are surrounded by the tower, so we’re looking forward to being able to see them again.”
