MP to prepare for emergencies: earthquake risk: no longer gullible
When I see the neighbors walking in the “hood,” I feel a renewed spring in our steps – the change of season brings passion to an extended life in the world. How can we use this renewed vitality not only to lift our spirits but also to elevate our readiness for the next turmoil of our “normal” life?
While we all need a break and something fun to focus on in our lives, thank God the emergency preparedness offices in our city and state are working hard. Did you know that our state actively tracks seismic activity around the clock? I have to admit, the weblink subtitle gave me quite a few moments – most recent earthquakes past 24 hours, volcanodiscovery.com. Yikes! But there is more. I constantly find new information on their website and was impressed when I found the information on the risk mitigation plan to be more comprehensive than I had imagined.
What is an all-risk mitigation plan?
The HMP is a comprehensive document containing detailed information about the types of risks we face and actions we can take before disasters strike to reduce our vulnerability.
The Building Management Plan addresses six types of risks:
Climate change: rising temperatures, rising sea levels, decreasing ice density and streamflow
Geological Hazards: Earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes
Biological hazards: disease/epidemic, bioterrorism
Intentional risks: social unrest, attacks, cyberattack, and disruption
Infrastructure risks: transportation accidents, fires, hazardous materials accidents, infrastructure, structural failures and power outages
Weather hazards: extreme heat events, floods, snow, ice, water shortages, windstorms
Through planning and services, our city and state work closely with FEMA and other federal agencies to achieve two goals: to save lives and restore essential services. To achieve these goals they remind us as ordinary citizens: “We are counting on you to prepare.”
face facts
As you explore https://www.seattle.gov/em Emergency-management, you will learn about facts like these:
Earthquakes are the most serious danger facing Seattle.
The earthquake in the Seattle Fault poses the greatest danger to Seattle because the Seattle Fault Zone extends from east to west through downtown.
Mega earthquakes are the greatest danger to the broader West Coast region. The massive earthquake can reach M9.0+ and affect an area from Canada to northern California. The Cascadia Massive Earthquake could rank as one of the largest ever recorded, but because Seattle is hundreds of miles from the source, the seismic waves will weaken slightly before they reach Seattle. The shaking will be violent and long but not as intense as the Seattle earthquake.
Secondary effects such as landslides, tsunamis, fires, infrastructure failures and releases of hazardous materials can become disasters in their own right. In past earthquakes, more people died from fires than from building collapses.
A major earthquake in Seattle could trigger a 16-foot tsunami that would hit the Seattle coast within seconds of the earthquake and submerge it within 5 minutes. The massive earthquake will not cause a tsunami as Seattle submerges, but it is expected to cause strong currents in Seattle waters that could be dangerous to ships. A deep earthquake may cause landslides that lead to a tsunami.
The M7.0 earthquake in Seattle could cause dozens of fires. Putting out fires may be more difficult due to cut transportation routes and potential damage to the water system, which could reduce water pressure in many parts of the city.
Use the spring to prepare more
I quote all this from the website, not to create an alarm, but to work. It’s time to take your preparations seriously, it’s time to take advantage of the bounty of resources the OEM has to offer to do just that.
Nobody wants to divert time away from enjoying the coming of spring and all its promises, but I wonder, as we enjoy more neighborhood walks, can we start making a mental map of things that might come in handy for us to see if the weather or climate change catastrophe befalls us, Maybe a big earthquake?
Consider these questions as you consider sunshine, the enticing aromas of witch hazel or daphnia blooming or the blooming of cherry blossoms:
Do you know where to cut water and gas mains to keep your home safe from water pollution or fire? Do you know how and have the tool to do the shutdown?
Does your family know who your immediate neighbors are in case you need a helping hand?
What areas in the neighborhood might be most vulnerable to damage or risk, and alternatively, where might you find safety or the necessary resources?
What communication system would you turn to if you didn’t have a phone or tech service to reach your loved ones?
How do I get to the emergency call center at Madison Park tennis courts? In the event of a disaster, neighbors can come to the center to share information about specific hazards (for example, gas leaks, fires, or unstable buildings on their blocks) or to obtain information such as the condition of roads, bridges, or water quality. The center will also provide a system for disseminating information about things such as lost and found people and pets, potential emergency shelter, and medical or other needs.
If my family and loved ones are safe, what skills and experience might I offer to help others?
If these questions pique your interest or raise any concern, where might you find reassurance?

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history.
