Mexico earthquake: Magnitude 5.7 earthquake shakes Veracruz state

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit a small town in southeastern Mexico on Thursday.

The epicenter was about seven miles north of Nopalapan, according to the US Geological Survey. The city of about 2,000 people is located in the Mexican state of Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico.

The earthquake occurred 235 miles south of Mexico City. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage from the quakes, which occurred at a depth of 69 miles.

The earthquake alarm was activated briefly in the capital, a city of nearly nine million people.

Reuters reported that Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was briefly evacuated from his morning press conference amid alarm alerts. The President later returned and confirmed that there were no reports of serious damage.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told the news agency that some buildings in the capital had been evacuated according to protocol, and the metro train system had resumed operations.

Perched atop three large tectonic plates, Mexico is one of the world’s most seismically active regions, and the country has a long history of devastating events and volcanic eruptions.

The Baja California Peninsula, west of the Gulf of California, lies on the Pacific Plate that overrides the North American Plate.

The San Andreas Fault is an 800-mile stretch that runs through California from San Diego to north of San Francisco where tectonic plates meet. This fault line may be able to trigger much larger earthquakes than previously thought, according to results published this week in the Journal of Geology.

The researchers said that previous assumptions about the potential magnitude of fault line earthquakes have been underestimated.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck California Wine State, north of the town of Healdsburg, Sonoma County.

In September 1985, an 8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 9,500 people in Mexico City.

Popocatepetl and Ecstachihuatl volcanoes, located to the southeast of the capital, sometimes vent gas. In 1994 and 2000 Popocatépetl renewed its activity and forced mass evacuations. Popocatépetl volcano last erupted in 2010.
