Earthquakes scores two late goals to tie with Crewe

Francisco Calvo’s second goal in the match after six minutes of injury time sent San Jose by hand to a stunning 3-3 draw with visiting Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Calvo headed a corner kick after pulling the earthquakes (0-1-1, one point) within 3-2 when he scored in the 84th minute.

Lukas Zelarayan scored two goals for the crew (1-0-1, 4 points).

San Jose advanced 1-0 in the ninth minute from a penalty kick by Christian Espinosa, but Earthquakes lost a player in the 33rd minute when Gameiro Montero received a red card.

Zelarayan tied 1-1 in the 40th minute, Gyasi Zardes put the team ahead in the 68th minute, and Zelrayan extended the lead to 3-1 in the 73rd minute with a free kick from 22 yards. He had three goals this season.

But Calvo’s late goals earned the Earthquakes their first point of the new season.

The Crew have had a hard time winning on the road in recent seasons, and they fell behind early on when Milos Degenek made a foul on Paul Marie. The VAR decision awarded a penalty, and Espinosa placed a right-footed shot into the lower left corner to lead 1–0.

San Jose had a problem of their own with Montero interfering with Darlington Ngbe which resulted in him receiving a red card.

The Crew capitalized to make it 1-1 on Zelarayan’s breaker from 20 yards. Since joining Crew in 2020 and helping Columbus win the MLS Cup that season, Zelarayan has scored 13 goals from outside the box.

The Zardes put Columbus ahead 2-1 three minutes after replacing Miguel Perry after a pass from Derek Etienne Jr. Zelarayan doubled the lead with a shot in the upper right corner. He had five goals from free kicks last season, the second most in an MLS season since 2003.

The Crew 3-14-11 is on the road the past two seasons and was suspended nine times in 17 away games last season

The upcoming teams play on March 12th when the Earthquakes visit Philadelphia while The Crew hosts Toronto FC.
