Earthquake hits Adelaide, but no damage reported

The earthquake hit Adelaide this morning, with thousands of people within 100 km of the Central Business District reporting the quake.

Key points: A 3.8-magnitude tremor was felt 100 km from the Adelaide CBD, and there are currently no reports of major damage. The earthquake occurred at 7:20 AM.

Geoscience Australia said the 3.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Mount Parker in the Adelaide Hills at 7:20 am.

A magnitude 2.5 aftershock was recorded at 9 a.m. around the Mount Parker area.

Reports posted on the Geoscience Australia website show that the first tremor was felt as far as Waterloo in the north, all the way to Encounter Bay in the south.

Phil Cummins, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia, said that while the quake was strong enough to be felt, it would not have caused significant damage.

“This is definitely important in terms of feeling,” he said.

“Anyone close to that earthquake can feel it, but I’d say it’s not likely to cause any significant damage.

“It might cause some kind of crack in the grout, and possibly cause things to fall off the shelves, but I wouldn’t expect any kind of structural damage.”

People have taken to social media to report waking up with a tiny amount of shaking and gurgling, but police and the state emergency service say there are no reports of damage.

One Adelaide Twitter user said it felt “more than a small jolt”.

Dr. Cummins said the quake was “relatively shallow,” but that people at Mount Parker would have felt it as a “sharp initial wave” followed by a jagged motion.

The tremor was reported as 10 km deep, but Dr. Cummins said that was the number usually given for shallow earthquakes, so it wasn’t accurate.

Dr Cummins said South Australia in general has been hit by more earthquakes than most other places in Australia.

He said there had been more than 100 tremors within 100 kilometers of Mount Parker over the past century, but most of them were smaller than 3.8.

The Met Office said there was no danger of a tsunami from the quake.
