WENDELL – East Franklin County residents might have felt their homes shaking a little Friday evening, and no, it wasn’t a big truck driving through town. Instead, the area was hit by a detectable earthquake, which is rare.

The USGS confirmed a 2.4-magnitude earthquake Friday at approximately 5:50 p.m., marking the first Franklin County earthquake detected by USGS seismographs since at least January 2010. A 1.9-magnitude earthquake — which no one likely feels — was detected in Northampton in 2012, according to the USGS database.

The 2.4-magnitude earthquake is considered very minor and “is not normally felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph,” according to the Michigan Technological University’s Department of Engineering, Geosciences and Mining.

Very small earthquakes typically occur once or twice a year in New England, according to the USGS. Moderate earthquakes occur every few decades and the last to cause a significant amount of damage was a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in central New Hampshire in 1940.

Friday’s Wendell earthquake, which occurred about 3.5 kilometers below the surface, is the fourth in a series of small earthquakes to hit New England over the past month, according to USGS data. A 2.9-magnitude earthquake – the most powerful – struck Gorham, New Hampshire on February 4. A 1.9-magnitude earthquake hit Gorham again on February 16, and a 1.8-magnitude earthquake hit Kontokok, New Hampshire the next day. . However, the two earthquakes in late February were too minor for a human to detect, with anything less than 2.0 on the Richter scale only detectable by a seismograph, according to the University of Washington.

In fact, the USGS has recorded 30 earthquakes since January 2021 in New England, and each earthquake has registered less than 3.0 on the Richter scale.

Earthquakes on the East Coast are much less frequent than on the West Coast, and determining their exact locations is also difficult. They occur at shallow depths, but the Appalachian Mountains and the formation of subsurface tectonic plates complicate the search as the area “is riddled with known faults, but many smaller or deeply buried faults remain undetected,” according to the USGS. This means that scientists cannot always determine which faults slip and cause earthquakes.

An email has not been returned to the US Eastern media representative at the US Geological Survey as of press time. Several phone calls to local geology departments at area universities over the weekend also went unanswered.
