Did an earthquake occur near Elgin, South Carolina?

The region has seen 20 small earthquakes since December.

Kershaw County, South Carolina – Kershaw County recorded its second earthquake this month, continuing a trend of minor tremors in that area that began late last year.

The 2.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at 11:09 a.m. Wednesday with its epicenter four miles east-southeast of Elgin. It originated about 2.2 miles below the surface.

The earthquake is at the lower end of the magnitude scale and is unlikely to be felt by anyone unless they are near the epicenter.

Just four days ago – on March 5 – a 1.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded just a few miles from this latest earthquake. Since December 27, a total of 20 earthquakes have struck the same area, 17 of those presumed to have been aftershocks of a larger 3.3-magnitude earthquake that preceded it.

It is not known why this region experienced so many earthquakes in such a short time.

Earthquakes occur all over the state but most are located near the coast. Approximately 70 percent of earthquakes occur in the coastal plain, and most of them occur in the Lowcountry.

Back in 1886, Charleston was hit by a catastrophic earthquake. His strength was estimated at 7.3, and he was felt in faraway places, Cuba and New York. At least 60 people were killed, and thousands of buildings were damaged.

The structural damage extended hundreds of miles to cities in Alabama, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Geologists say Charleston is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the eastern United States.
