People reported hearing the explosion all over Greater Cairo, including in Maadi, 6th of October City and Sheikh Zayed.

“What happened was the result of the construction work of an electric railway line in east Cairo, which expelled energy in the form of a powerful shock,” NRIAG said.

Egypt is currently building a 1,800 km high-speed electric railway network linking the country’s eastern and northern coasts. The railway will serve up to 30 million people annually, reducing their travel time from two to four hours on average.

When completed, the train will be the sixth longest high-speed network in the world, according to Michael Peter, CEO of Germany’s Siemens, which acquired the project.

A consortium of Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors has signed a contract with the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels to deliver the country’s first major electrified high-speed railway.

The first phase of the $23 billion electrical system is scheduled for completion in 2023.
