Nepalese volunteers become local heroes during the pandemic

Paktapur, Nepal – When the new mother died in hospital last month – the first person who died of 19 cells in Nepal – her days-old baby was transferred to the isolation ward.

But the woman’s body remained. For fear of infection, ambulance drivers and hospital workers refused to transfer the body from the hospital morgue to the crematorium, where it could be incinerated according to Hindu tradition.

Thus the authorities invited RNA-16 – three men and a woman in distinctive blue vests, best known for their selfless, volunteer work in Bhaktapur, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site known as the “City of Temples” just east of the capital Kathmandu.

RNA-16 symbolizes “rescue and awareness” and 16 types of disasters they are preparing to deal with, from the devastating Nepal earthquake of 2015 to road accidents. Doctors, hospital officials and civil leaders said that their unique services in the epidemic amounted to a much greater sacrifice.

“They are really our heroes and doing things that nobody wants to do. When health workers fear, they dared to help people with this epidemic,” said Kiran Thapa, city councilor.

They have received financial support from companies, and doctors and civilian leaders have praised them for helping the unprepared healthcare system.

Since Nepal reported its first cases, the team has been camping in a tent hanging on the roof of a hospital pharmacy in Bhaktapur.

“Once the closure was announced, we decided to camp here and provide assistance because we were expecting a large influx of people coming to the tests,” team captain Aaron Saengo told the Associated Press from their leaked tent.

Senju, 31, is a school safety trainer. The team formed in the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake. Sick with a high fever, he left his hospital bed to help exhausted employees.

“I used to separate the bodies from the wounded and classify them as doctors,” Sayingo said. “This is when my life turned, and I decided to help people.”

Noga Kijo, 20, works as a computer operator at a government office, and Rajesh Jaejo, 28, is a teacher of history and culture. Only a 22-year-old nurse, a 22-year-old nurse, receives any formal medical training.

As the virus raged in neighboring China earlier this year, the team trained with the Nepal Army to better prepare for the epidemic, including how to deal with viral samples and infected bodies.

When most of the city’s first responders refused to transport suspects from phone patients 19, RNA-16 converted a loaned truck into a temporary ambulance and started sending calls from all over Bhaktapur and surrounding villages to pick people up for virus testing.

Regardless of the tent in which they sleep, they set up two tents inside hospital grounds where they and hospital nurses collect samples for virus testing. Up to 80 people come to the hospital for tests every day. Volunteers help them arrange, collect information and take samples.

Then last month, they were posted after the death of the young mother.

“When we got to the morgue, there was blood sprinkled all over the floor and the body was not wrapped properly. We had to repack the body in a body bag, lift it in the car and transport it to the Pashupati temple in order to burn the bodies,” Senju said.

Even in the crematorium, the staff was not approaching the body, so the team loaded it in the oven while the family was standing at a distance. Sainju said RNA-16 had become a “funeral procession for the lady.”

After that, they quarantined for 11 days, during which Sainju was constantly concerned.

His concern: In their absence, people who needed help were suffering.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
