Philadelphia Union beats San Jose Earthquakes as Jim Curtin scores 100 . win

Corey Burke and Daniel Gazdag each scored one goal, and host Philadelphia Union beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 on Saturday in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Goalkeeper Andre Blake (1 save) got the shutdown and coach Jim Curtin scored his 100th career win with Al Ittihad. Curtin became the thirteenth coach in league history to win 100 games and the ninth to do so with one club.

Al-Ittihad (2-0-1, 7 points) extended its unbeaten streak to three to open the season.

Earthquakes (0-2-1, 1 point) are still looking for their first win in 2022. They have conceded eight goals in three games.

Al-Ittihad dominated the attacking rhythm during the first 15 minutes, with several strong chances to score.

In the 18th minute, San Jose goalkeeper GT Marcinkovsky (three saves) made an excellent save from Nathan Harel’s header from close range.

The Earthquakes got their first corner kick in the 22nd minute, but they played it short and nothing materialized.

Then Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Sergio Santos sent a clear pass across the box and Burke put it in the net.

Santos almost extended the lead in the 30th minute, but fired a shot from about 18 yards out of an open net with Marcinkowski off center.

In the 41st minute, San Jose’s Cristian Espinosa managed to dodge from outside the penalty area directly and rip Blake’s shot.

Al-Ittihad advanced 2-0 in the 58th minute when Gezdag scored from a penalty kick. San Jose’s Jackson Yoel whistled for a handball shot into the penalty area, starting the penalty kick.

The game became full of dynamism with players in both clubs dropping several times.

The Earthquakes had two chances to score in the 80th minute, but they couldn’t get the other end of a cross and then a shot was blocked on the counter.

Despite eight minutes of injury time, Al Ittihad easily kept the clean sheet.
