‘Like an Earthquake’: Repairs underway on extensive damage to Shoalhaven Streets | Eloara Mercury
news, latest news,
Damage to roads is expected to be in the millions in Shoalhaven, following this week’s severe weather event. The sheer volume of water falling through the area has destroyed roads, with many, including Watamula Road, closed indefinitely due to landslides. While residents of the Kangaroo Valley regained access to the village and beyond with an escort on Wednesday after being isolated, some remain stuck due to a ban on access on smaller roads. Transport NSW has confirmed that there are currently no restrictions on access between Kangaroo Valley Road, Kangaroo Valley and Bunkers Hill Road, Baringari. Residents were particularly concerned about the condition of Watamula Road in Mount Woodhill which has experienced a major recession. “My partner … has lived there for 20 years and has never seen anything like this before,” said Annie Marie Abbott, a close compatriot. “Although the road has collapsed, it has been an ongoing problem and the Council has done work on this spot on three separate occasions over the years.” In 2020, Shoalhaven City Council spent $425,000 on Watamula Road to re-stabilize the dam. Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley said it will take some time before Watamula Road becomes impassable. “There are some very serious collapses on the roads there,” Cr Findley said. “This will need engineers to assess what to do. This will take some time, it is not a quick fix.” He also needs to understand how long it will take to return to stable conditions before any road works can be done. Kar Findley said she understands the community’s frustration, but more money is needed to fix the area’s roads. She added that Shoalhaven City Council is running a “$30 million shortfall” to upgrade the roads to a higher level. “One million requests have been made for Gilmore applicants to be an item we want them to stick to in the federal election, so we can get more investment in Shoalhaven in terms of roads,” Cr Findley said. “Because $30 million is an impossible request on Shoalhaven’s current budget. Gilmore Representative Fiona Phillips and Gilmore Liberal candidate Andrew Constance both said they would push for more. I’ve been in discussions with the board in general about the $30 million shortfall, but that was ahead of the floods… I’d advocate more,” Ms. Phillips said. “Instead of just taking this step-by-step approach to fixing one hole after another…there should be a major diversion to significant road works in Shoalhaven…that is what I am seeking,” Constance said. Ms. Phillips added that she would prioritize applying for funding through natural disaster recovery to go local. Cr Findley added that she had put questions to council CEO Stephen Dincia about projects that could be delayed so that money can be funneled to the roads over the coming months. “This will disappoint a lot of people, but these will be some of the measures we have to take.” The Illawarra Mercury Editorial Room is funded by our readers. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
