An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 hits Indonesia. No injuries or damage were reported

A strong earthquake struck off the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Monday morning, prompting residents to flee their homes, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The US Geological Survey said the shallow quake with a magnitude of 6.7 occurred at 4:06 am (2109 GMT) at a depth of 21 km, with an epicenter 167 km west of the coastal city of Pariaman.

The epicenter was 197 km from Padang, the capital and largest city of West Sumatra Province.

The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the quake was felt in many parts of the province, but there was no danger of a tsunami. It happened just before dawn and its epicenter was about 161 kilometers (100 mi) southeast of South Nias, an area in North Sumatra province.

“People felt the quake for one minute of medium strength as people panicked and fled their homes,” the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a preliminary report.

The Indonesian Geophysics Agency said the quake was followed by a series of strong aftershocks.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially said that the earthquake could trigger a tsunami affecting the Indian Ocean region, but soon lifted the warning.

“Based on the latest report, there are no damages and casualties, but we continue to monitor. The tremor was felt strongly on the southern island of Nias,” said Agus Wibisono, head of the search and rescue office in Nias.

After the tsunami threat passed, he added, “people calmed down.”

Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, which has caused it to experience frequent earthquakes.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s West Sumatra province last month, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 400. Thousands of homes and other buildings were damaged by the tremors, which were felt as far away as Malaysia and Singapore.
