Evansville Sr. + Son collects money for the fish farm in Haiti

Finding hope and sympathy in these times can be difficult. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and violent protests persist in the wake of George Floyd’s death before our eyes on TV and on the Internet, it is easy to fall into the mentality of despair. It is every man, woman and child for themselves. But, as we’ve seen again and again, there are those in our society who give this hope. To remind us that we are all human, and when some of us cannot help ourselves, it is up to us to reach out to us and lend a hand. Be it in our community or in another part of the world.

Inspired by his father’s trips to Haiti, 9-year-old CJ Martin is asking us to help us provide food to the community he needs.

During those trips, he met CJ’s father, Chad Martin, and befriended Dr. Leo Bertolian. According to Chad, Dr. Liu devoted his life to serving the poor and responding to Christ’s call. This service includes an attempt to rebuild a fish farm damaged during the strong earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. Before it damaged it made the farm nearly inoperable, the 21 tank farm was used to lift tilapia fish that eventually became food for residents struggling from In order to obtain a stable food source, including more than 1,000 children.

As you can see in the video below that Chad recently shared on its Facebook page, the earthquake caused cracks in the concrete tanks that prevented them from retaining water. Despite efforts by Dr. Liu and his team to repair the cracks, the problem remains. Each new concrete pour tank will be required in order to be operable again.

However, cracks are not the only problem. The earthquake and general aging have left the pipes that carry water continuously to useless tanks, requiring them all be replaced.

The Father and Son team created the Haitian Fish Project through St. Joe’s Catholic Church, and they are currently accepting donations to help Dr. Liu and his team run the tanks and keep them running again. When fully operational, the farm can breed more than 20,000 fish annually.
