Memories of the 5.7-magnitude Utah earthquake are still vivid for those whose homes were damaged

Magna – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook this morning two years ago.

I felt it in Salt Lake City, but many people around Magna were hurt more. One such area is a mobile home park, right on the West Valley City line. The people there still live with the reminders of that day.

“There is another one, which has been flagged as unsafe,” said Paula Van Hayes.

It was morning when everything changed. “Yeah, rude wake-up, very rude wake up,” Van Heys said.

Van Hess said belongings were falling off her shelves and walls. “And my house was rocking back and forth,” she said, “and the children were running out of the bedrooms, crying.”

Lots of people here feel that way. Dozens of homes were deemed unsafe or restricted. Noel Johnson’s home was one of those.

“We just fell off basically, like two feet forward, two feet that way,” Johnson said.

Major repairs like this have now been made, though she says there are still some minor cracks in its walls. “Permanent reminders are always there,” she said.

Van Hise said looking closely and can be seen wrapping around the foundation of her home, where supports still need to be replaced.

“I’ve been in Utah for 20 years, and I didn’t think about anything until the earthquake,” she said.

And now, there’s the realization that someone else can be just as bad.

“We had to completely rebuild our balcony,” Johnson said.

But looking back, they are also grateful that no one was hurt. Despite all these damages, they still have their family.

“It really showed us how really fortunate in so many ways we are, like the community has really come up with so much to help us, the family has helped us so much, and we’ve brought real perspective to all of these things,” Johnson said.

Some homes in Magna now have stronger stabilizers that are supposed to better handle the next earthquake.

However, there are others, such as Van Hise, who have not received as much damage and, as a result, have not been able to repair it because it is too expensive.
