Looking back at the Magna earthquake

MAGNA, Utah – Several businesses on Main Street in Magna have collapsed since the 5.7-magnitude earthquake two years ago.

Magna was near the epicenter, but it was also a center of generosity and community.

Colosimo is a small shop on Magna’s main street – a business that has been around for nearly 100 years.

“It gives you a lot of pride to do it like that,” said Danny Colosimo, who owns the shop with his brother Charlie.

Friday marked the second anniversary since the brothers had to temporarily lock their door.

Colossus was still thinking about how to get through the epidemic when the earthquake happened.

“It was a little bit side to side, but to me, it felt like it sank. The whole town felt like it sank,” Danny said.

The biggest damage was to an external wall.

It took months to fix it, and although customers couldn’t come by, the Colossus family members kept their business going.

“We were able to come in and work and help the clients out the side door and back as best we could,” Danny said.

What made all the difference to Colossimus was the outreach to their community.

“I had clients call us and offer us money to get it fixed,” Danny said.

This is not the first time a family has been hit by an earthquake or that their community has come to their rescue.

Danny showed FOX 13 News his Kodacolor prints from December 1962 – pictures of an earthquake that left their store shelves on the floor.

The people in the photos were workers and helpers from the community.

“If there is one positive thing to glean from the experience, that is it. How kind people are and how nice they can be,” said Danny.

Colossimus made it through these difficult times, but many businesses along Magna Main Street did not.

Another establishment still going strong is The Empress Theatre, just down the street. The theater owners said the earthquake was a turning point for them.

Two years later, the theater room became a construction site where volunteers work to transport their audience from Magna to “Austria”.

Ty Whiting, artistic director of The Empress Theater, said they have two weeks to prepare their next production set: The Sound of Music.

Anxiety about their upcoming production wasn’t even in their books a couple of years ago.

“We were very close to closing,” Whiting said. “The day before the earthquake, we decided to close our doors due to COVID. The next day there was an earthquake and there were conversations about ‘is it time to finish?’

The Empress Theater has been around for 106 years. They opened their doors again in 1916.

The earthquake caused losses estimated at $60,000 to $70,000, which the owners could not afford.

Whiting said a group of community members came together to create Knight of the Empress LLC. This group funded the repair and renovations.

“It’s good to know that people care,” Whiting said.

Repair work took about 10 months, but COVID precautions kept the theater closed for 14 months.
