Nearly 90 small earthquakes hit the Portuguese island of Azores in São Jorge

LISBON – Authorities in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores have been put on alert after nearly 90 small earthquakes struck the volcanic island of São Jorge in the mid-Atlantic in just over 24 hours, although there were no reports of damage.

The Orzelina volcano in São Jorge last erupted in 1808 and the Azores Civil Protection Authority has requested an assessment by experts from the Volcanic Monitoring Center in the region.

Civil Protection said in a statement that it had already contacted mayors and local firefighting units, asking them to “be vigilant” and help residents of São Jorge if necessary.

The seismic activity began on Saturday afternoon, the authority said, urging people to remain calm, stay informed and follow the recommendations of officials.

The earthquake intensity ranged from 1.9 to 3.3.

São Jorge, one of the nine islands that make up the Azores, is home to about 8,200 people and is part of the archipelago’s central group, which includes the popular tourist destinations of Faial and Pico, both of which are also volcanic.
