The devastating earthquake in Japan last week may exacerbate the global shortage of microchips, just as the number of vehicles removed from factory rolls so far this year has crossed the one million mark.

Renesas Electronics Corp., a major producer of auto chips, last week halted production at three Japanese plants after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, March 16.

Two of the plants remained closed over the weekend, while the third resumed partial production on test lines. It was not clear when full production could resume.

The disaster has left two million homes without power in Japan, but it also threatens to have ripple effects in the auto supply chain. About 1.2 million cars have been left off global production plans this year due to a lack of chips, AutoForecast Solutions estimates. That’s up from about 929,500 vehicles one week ago, driven in large part by additional production cuts in Europe and Asia.
