Parts of the UK were hit by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in the early hours of this morning.

Dozens of people reported their homes were a ‘rumble’ today as tremors shook parts of northern Scotland.

The earthquake, measuring 5.1 degrees, occurred at 5.32 a.m. off the coast to the northeast of Shetland.

But due to the distance from the epicenter, the intensity of the earthquake in the UK was lower than the figure recorded in the Norwegian Sea.

The British Geological Survey said it was felt by residents in Shetland, Aberdeen, Elon, Stonehaven, Helmsdale, Inverery, Laerg, Huntley, Banff and Fraserburg.

The British stated that they heard “low roaring” while the windows were “shaken” by the earthquake.

Others said they felt “three waves of shaking in about three seconds” as many were awakened by the tremors.

Meanwhile, people in parts of Scotland said their ‘beds shook and windows squeaked’ and they ‘felt and heard it, enough to wake me up’.

The survey said one report came from Aberdeen – more than 311 miles from the epicenter – which was about 86 miles west of Norway.

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred underground in the Norwegian Sea.

More than 70 members of the public reported the quake, which was said to last about two minutes, to the USGS.

Ryan Thompson, who lives in Wadbester, Shetland, said he woke up to something that sounded like a “low-flying jet”.

He said, “At first I woke up to a sound very similar to a very low jet or very loud thunder, and it wasn’t until I saw the light shadow moving that I clicked that this could be a small earthquake.

“There wasn’t a lot of movement here, I think other parts of Shetland felt that more, but the noise was very loud and very disturbing.

“Earthquakes are of course very rare but unheard of here in Shetland.

“There was one about five years ago in a similar place, but that was definitely the loudest and clearest I’ve seen in Shetland.”

Tiffany Rollo, who lives in Sandwick, Shetland, told The Shetland News: “I thought it was just a heavy cargo truck or something going by at first.

“But it seemed to get worse with the whole house shaking, and the items on my bed table were shaking and shaking.”

Adam Priest added: “The house shook for 30 seconds, like a tuning fork.

“It woke me up at first and then kept shivering, slowly waning within 30 seconds.”

In January, a strong earthquake of magnitude 3.6 was recorded in the North Sea, in the region of oil and gas platforms.

It hit about 146 miles east of Aberdeen.
