Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes Scottish homes as locals wake up

Scots woke up to the “shaking of their beds” and the “rumble” of their homes this morning thanks to a 5.1-magnitude earthquake.

Residents of Aberdeen and Shetland panicked at 5.23am, with news of the tremors reported off the coast of the northeastern islands.

According to the British Geological Survey, people were “lying in bed and heard a low roar” as there were “three vibration waves in about three seconds”.

Residents reported waking up from their windows shaking, beds shaking and windows creaking.

In addition to feeling the quake, the Scots also reported hearing it too – enough to wake them up, the Mirror reports.

More than 70 members of the public reported the quake, which was said to last about two minutes, according to the US Geological Survey.

There are approximately 200-300 earthquakes in Britain each year, but the vast majority of earthquakes are so small that no one notices them.

However, it is between 20-30 more than 2.0 degrees which can be felt over a wider area.

Ryan Thompson, who lives in Shetland, said he woke up to something that sounded like a “low-flying jet”.

“At first I woke up to a sound very similar to a very low jet or very loud thunder, and it wasn’t until I saw the light shadow moving that I clicked that this could be a small earthquake,” he said.

“There wasn’t a lot of movement here, I think other parts of Shetland felt that more, but the noise was very loud and very disturbing.

“Earthquakes are very rare, of course, but they are not unheard of here in Shetland.

“There was one about five years ago in a similar place, but that was definitely the loudest and clearest I’ve seen in Shetland.”

Earthquakes in Scotland are often attributed to ice rebounds.

Until about 10,500 years ago, most of the north of the UK was covered by a thick layer of ice – pushing the rocks further down into the underlying mantle.

These rocks have been slowly rising since the ice melted, causing occasional earthquakes in the process.

The United Kingdom is also subject to tectonic pressures from the expansion of the Atlantic Ocean, which is slowly pushing the entire region of Eurasia to the east, and from the northward movement of Africa, which is pushing towards Europe from the south.
