Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes parts of UK as people wake up to the ‘rumble’ of their homes

An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck early this morning parts of Scotland.

Terrified locals woke up to “shaking and roaring sounds” while lying in bed at 5.30am.

They said their windows and beds “shaken for minutes” by the tremors off the northeastern coast of Shetland.

It struck 10 kilometers underground in the Norwegian Sea, according to the US Geological Survey.

But the tremors were widely felt by people – including Shetland, Elon, Stonehaven, Helmsdale, Inverery, Lairg, Huntley, Banff and Fraserburg.

One report came to the British Geological Survey from Aberdeen – more than 311 miles from the epicenter.

Ryan Thompson, who lives in Wadbester, Shetland, said he woke up to something that sounded like a “low-flying jet”.

‘I awoke at first to a sound very similar to a very low jet or very loud thunder,’ he said, ‘and it wasn’t until I saw the light shadow moving that I clicked that this could be a small earthquake.

There wasn’t a lot of movement here, I think other parts of Shetland felt that more, but the noise was very loud and very disturbing.

“Earthquakes are of course very rare but unheard of here in Shetland.

“There was one about five years ago in a similar place, but that was definitely the loudest and clearest I’ve seen in Shetland.”

Another person who felt the quake described it as “three waves of vibration in about three seconds.”

Meanwhile, another person said he “felt it as he heard it, enough to wake me up”.

More than 70 people in the UK reported the quake, which was said to last about two minutes.

It follows a 2.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the West Midlands in February.

One resident said it was “like a wardrobe falling out or a window exploding.”

Another earthquake of magnitude 3.6 was recorded in the North Sea in January.
