The most prominent opposition figure in Russian President Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny, has been charged with fraud and contempt of court. He has been sentenced to nine years in a “strict regime colony” in a case that has been denied by his supporters. Navalny was arrested when he returned to Russia last year after surviving a poisoning charge against the Kremlin. He is already serving a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for violating bail conditions while in hospital.
