The WHO has announced the shortlist and jury of the Film Festival, including Sharon Stone, Emilia Clarke, Mia Maestro, Anita Abada, Eddie Ndopu and Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen

More than 1,000 filmmakers from more than 110 countries have submitted short films for the 3rd edition of the WHO Health for All Film Festival (HAFF), on topics ranging from the trauma of war to life with COVID-19. About 70 films were shortlisted, which will be screened by international actors and development leaders, before the winners are announced in mid-May 2022.

This large participation of patients, health professionals, health professionals, NGOs, students, public institutions, as well as professional filmmakers, shows the potential of the Festival to contribute to health promotion and education. Including applications received in 2022, the festival has registered nearly 3,500 films since its launch in 2020, many of which were made specifically for the initiative.

“The success of the Health Film Festival for All World Health Organizations reflects the great interest and increased global awareness of the importance of health and ensuring that people can achieve the highest levels of physical and mental well-being,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus. “The wide range of topics presented in this year’s applications, and the high caliber of judges, underscore the growing importance of the festival as a platform to draw public attention to urgent health issues.”

The following prominent professionals, artists and activists, along with three senior WHO experts, make up this year’s festival jury: Sharon Stone (US actor); Emilia Clarke (UK actor); My lord (actor from Argentina); Anita Abada (manufacturer from Nigeria); Eddie Ndopu (UN SDGs Advocate of South Africa), and Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen (TV presenter from Germany).

70 shortlisted films are available to watch online in six playlists, one for each of the three main competition categories: universal health coverage, emergency health situations and better health and well-being, as well as three more on rehabilitation, health innovation and very Short films.

An additional list of songs – out of competition – will be released by the end of March to contribute to the theme of World Health Day 2022. “Our planet, our health”. This playlist will collect contributions from all three editions of the HAFF, as well as other productions by the WHO and other United Nations agencies.

The new selection in 2022 covers a wide range of health topics: war trauma; non-communicable diseases, including mental health problems; disability; malaria; infectious diseases, including COVID-19, HIV-AIDS; as well as environmental and social health factors, including gender-based violence, road safety and pollution. The health benefits of sports and the arts are also part of this choice.

The public is encouraged to choose one of the films they would like to promote and comment on its story / theme, before 10.th May 2022. Comments can be posted on their social networks using # Film4health or via the YouTube playlists available on the Festival website (link below) as well as on the WHO YouTube channel. Some public comments will be presented during a virtual HAFF awards ceremony in mid-May.

In the coming weeks, the jury will review the shortlisted films and recommend the winners to the WHO Director-General, who will make the final decision. Three “GREAT PRICE” and four special awards will be announced in mid-May during an online awards ceremony followed by a series of online interviews with the winners and juries.
