Earthquake damage, cold weather cause power outages for millions in Japan

MARCH 22 (UPI) — Parts of Japan, including Tokyo, faced the threat of blackouts on Tuesday due to a strong earthquake last week and a spike in usage from a new cold weather explosion.

Tokyo Power Holdings Inc., or TEPCO, and the Japanese Ministry of Industry have said between 2 and 3 million homes may be affected by blackouts as some stations have been out of work since the 7.3-magnitude earthquake on March 16 in Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region.

The Ministry of Interior and public utility companies have asked residents and businesses to limit energy use so that the idle thermal power plants can resume work.

The earthquake shook Japan, killing at least four people and injuring more than 100. It also reinforced frightening memories of the 2011 earthquake in the same region that destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plant and triggered a 23-foot tsunami that eventually killed 18,000 people. Its magnitude was 9.1 on the Richter scale.

“In addition to the suspension of thermal power plants due to the earthquake, the significant increase in demand due to bad weather is one of the factors leading to the tense energy supply situation and demand this time,” Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda said, according to Japan Today.

TEPCO called nine prefectures to conserve power throughout Tuesday, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Yamanashi and eastern Shizuoka.

Tokyo and other parts of Japan have seen cooler temperatures lately, usually normal in the middle of winter. Government officials said they hope to conserve energy at a rate of 10%.
