About 1800 earthquake hit the island of São Jorge, experts fear a strong tremor and a volcanic eruption

A series of multiple small earthquakes that hit an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean for three days could lead to a strong earthquake or volcanic eruption, experts said today, while authorities urged people not to travel there. .

The number of earthquakes recorded on the volcanic island of São Jorge, in the Azores archipelago, since Saturday afternoon, has risen to about 1,800 from a previous figure of 1,329, said Roy Marques, head of the CIVISA Volcanic Seismic Monitoring Center in the region.

Marques told Lusa News Agency that only 94 of the 1,800 earthquakes with a magnitude between 1.7 and 3.3 have been recorded so far, have been felt by residents.

São Jorge, one of the nine islands that make up the Azores, is home to about 8,400 people and is part of the archipelago’s central group, which includes the popular tourist destinations of Faial and Pico, which are also volcanic.

A series of small earthquakes, known as a swarm that have not yet caused any damage, have been reported along the volcanic fissure of the island of Manadas, which last erupted in 1808.

“All scenarios are on the table,” Marquez told Antena 1 radio station. “On the one hand, we could see a larger earthquake that could cause some destruction… On the other hand, we have a volcanic eruption scenario.”

Marx urged residents to remain vigil, though he said the earthquakes were of tectonic origin, referring to the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates, not volcanic ones.

“We should not treat this as a purely tectonic crisis but as a seismic crisis that occurs in an active volcanic system,” Marques said.

CIVISA has set up two additional seismic stations on the island and has deployed a team to measure soil gases, an indicator of volcanic activity. Marquez said levels have appeared normal so far.

The Civil Protection Authority said earlier on Tuesday that it was working with other entities to prepare a response in the event of an earthquake or large explosion.

In a separate statement on Tuesday evening, it advised people to avoid traveling to the leafy green island except for essential travel to ensure authorities do not face “additional restrictions” if they need help from local residents.

The sudden increase in seismic activity is reminiscent of swarms of earthquakes detected before the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on the Spanish island of La Palma last year, about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) southeast of the Azores. Read more
