The massive earthquake was confirmed by seismic data. Initial reports indicate that the earthquake occurred 77 kilometers (47 miles) south of Hualian City in Chinese Taipei. The event occurred at 5:41 PM UTC. Footage has already surfaced on social media showing swinging light fixtures, and anxious residents. There are no immediate fears of a tsunami.

The earthquake reportedly occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

Witness accounts were pouring into the EMC.

“I woke up in the middle of the night and everything was moving,” one resident said.

Another from Hsinchu said: “Strong shaking, very long, at least 30 seconds.

“The aftershock almost instantly for another 20 seconds.

“It’s not dangerous, but what worries me the most so far is an earthquake.”

Another said in Zubi: “The longest earthquake I’ve ever felt in my life.

The shaking lasted for more than a minute.

From Xindian, another resident spoke of the rapid succession of post-traumatic shock.

They said, “Sometimes stronger and longer. The aftershock followed the main earthquake right after that.”

In a reassuring tweet, one user wrote that the earthquake did not appear to have caused any damage.

Lauren Channa said: “Taiwan itself says 6.6 followed by 6.1 (there were actually two, I felt both).

“Taipei is fine, the West Coast is fine.

“Be worried about the less populous East Coast, but no this is not devastation on a national scale.”

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit the island last year, with minor damage reported again.

So far, there have been no reports from official sources regarding the situation that followed this incident.
