New earthquake research: Nevis fault rupture will have ‘very big’ impact on Queenstown Lakes area communities

New research in West Otago has revealed that the Nevis fault has the potential to rupture like the first Canterbury earthquake.

It is thought to produce a 7-degree tremor, and there is prehistoric evidence of it occurring twice before.

“It could be this type of range 7-7.5…when that happens? There isn’t enough data,” says lead researcher Professor Mark Stirling.

Research funded by the Seismological Commission has revealed evidence of at least two prehistoric events found within two 25-meter trenches in the Upper Nevis Basin near Queenstown.

“There is a significant amount of work to be done to assess what this means whether this bug is able to rupture on a regular basis,” says Dr. Joe Horrocks, EQC’s Chief Research and Resiliency Officer.

A 7.1 earthquake struck near Darfield in the Canterbury region in 2010. A similar tremor is believed to be possible in Otago as well.

“The similarities are really that they are in what we refer to as low-seismic zones,” Professor Stirling says.

“This is obviously going to be very important for the area – especially thinking about the communities in Queenstown Lakes,” says Dr Horrocks.

The Nevis region is known for its main tourist attractions, bungee jumping and catapult.

But the affected area of ​​the Nevis-Cardona joint fault system begins at Lake Wanaka, and extends for a distance of 100 kilometers near Garston in Southland.
