Warning against traveling to the Azores after a massive earthquake

The State Department has issued a travel warning for an island in the Portuguese Azores after a strong earthquake.

The State Department’s travel advisory was updated on Thursday, March 24, after the island of São Jorge was hit by more than 1,100 earthquakes in the span of 48 hours.

Portuguese Civil Protection authorities in the Azores have been monitoring an increase in seismic activity on the island of São Jorge since March 19.

The State Department said they have now activated their earthquake prevention plan and implemented a travel advisory advising against all but essential travel to the island.

Anyone already on the island of São Jorge is asked to avoid the areas of flat terrain, known locally as vagas, at the foot of the seaside cliffs in the municipality of Vilas.

Portuguese authorities are monitoring the situation, over fears that the Orselina island volcano could erupt similar to the eruption of Cumbre Vieja in La Palma last year.

The CIVISA Volcanic Monitoring Center in the area has raised the Volcanic Alert Level to 4 from 5.

Clelio Meneses, the regional secretary in charge of the Civil Protection Authority, said there was a “real possibility of an eruption”.

“What we’re doing is preparing for the worst-case scenario,” Reuters quoted Meneses as saying.

São Jorge, one of the nine islands that make up the Azores, is home to about 8,400 people.

It is feared that the earthquakes, whose magnitudes are between 1.6 and 3.3, could trigger a stronger tremor or a volcanic eruption.
