A 4.9-magnitude earthquake destroyed 42 homes in West Seram, Maluku

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck West Ceram Regency, Maluku Province on Thursday, March 24. The provisional data of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported on Friday, March 25, 19:40 WIB. (WIB) 42 homes were damaged by the natural disaster.

“Provisional data indicate that there were no casualties in this incident,” Abdel Mahari, acting head of the BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, said in a written statement on Saturday, March 26.

The earthquake occurred on Thursday, March 24 at 20:51 (Western-West Indonesia). People felt a tremor for 1-2 seconds. The disaster mitigation agency of Western Seram said the affected area was Kamarian village, Kairatu district. Ambon Islanders also felt the shaking for about 1-2 seconds.

The epicenter was 12 km southwest of Kairato, and the epicenter was 10 km away. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that the earthquake showed no possibility of a tsunami.

BNPB calls on the regional government and the people to remain alert. Based on the inaRISK analysis, there are 11 regions in western Ceram that have the probability of an earthquake of medium and high category, and one of the regions is Kairatu.
