A 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Ecuador

The Ecuadorean Geophysical Institute announced, on Saturday evening, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake at a depth of about 10 kilometers and about 23 kilometers from the city of Esmeralda, in the homonymous province, on the northern coast of the country.

For its part, the United States Geological Survey (USGS, for its English acronym), estimates the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.8 and its depth at 26 km. It also indicates that the epicenter is located 9 kilometers from Esmeraldas.

Later, the Geophysical Institute corrected the previous data and set the volume at 6.0, at a depth of 10 km and 11 km from Esmeraldas. Meanwhile, the Oceanic and Antarctic Institute of the Ecuadorean Navy confirmed that the characteristics of the event “do not meet the conditions necessary to generate a tsunami” on the country’s coasts.

Ecuador’s National Risk and Emergency Management Service (SNGRE) said it is monitoring what happened and recently stated that the earthquake was felt by 41 cantons (administrative divisions) of 11 of the 24 provinces that make up the country.

There is no official information on casualties, and structural damage in some areas was minor. In social networks, users indicated that, both in Esmeraldas and the town of Atakamis, the telluric movement and numerous aftershocks were strongly felt.
