Work begins to derail the shinkansen train that was affected by the earthquake

East Japan Railways has begun work to move the Shinkansen bullet train that was derailed in a strong earthquake earlier this month.

An express train was running on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line in Miyagi Prefecture on March 16 when a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. Of the 17 cars on the train, 16 went off the track. Four passengers were injured.

The operator has been working to return derailed cars to the tracks since March 20.

On Sunday, workers tied the first and second cars to a tow vehicle to take them to Shiroishizao station, about two kilometers away. The car took about 20 minutes to pull the cars to the station.

JR East expects to remove all cars from the site by the end of next week. The cars will then be transported to a base in the county.

Service is still suspended between Koriyama Station, Fukushima Prefecture, and Ichinoseki Station, Iwate Prefecture. The company aims to fully resume service around April 20.
