70 earthquakes detected on the Korean Peninsula in 2021: the data

SEOUL, March 27 (Korea Basewire) — A total of 70 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or stronger were detected in the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters last year, a level similar to the annual average over the past 20 years, the state’s weather agency said Sunday.

The 2021 figure is up from 68 recorded the previous year and is similar to the annual average of 70.6 since the country began tracking data related to a digital system in 1999, according to data from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

It added that of the total number, 16 cases were detected in North Korea and its surrounding waters.

Of the 70 cases, 65 cases were measured on a scale between 2.0 and 3.0, followed by three cases in a scale of 3.0–4.0 and two with a scale of 4.0–5.0. The country also experienced an additional 672 earthquakes calculated as weaker than 2.0 on the Richter scale.

The agency said the strongest earthquake last year was a 4.9-magnitude quake that struck the southern resort island of Jeju in December. It did not result in casualties.

The data showed that the largest number of earthquakes ever recorded was 252 in 2016, followed by 232 in 2017.
