There have been 43 earthquakes near Menton in the past week, including seven since 6:19 p.m. Saturday, according to EarthquakeTrack.com.

The site reported Sunday that seismic activity is picking up again with more than 57 percent of earthquakes in the past month occurring in the past week. The general location for most of the activity is West Menton, which is in Loving County and more than 90 miles west of Midland.

The seven earthquakes that occurred early Saturday evening through Sunday morning included a 3.8-magnitude earthquake, which occurred about 23 miles west-southwest of Menton and at a depth of 4.34 miles.

In March, the Reporter-Telegram reported that oil and gas operators in the Permian Basin had collaborated with the Railroad Commission in drafting a plan to address the increasing rate and intensity of earthquakes in the area.

The commission’s first operator-led response plan was implemented in the North Culperson-Reeves Seismic Response Zone.

The plan aims to reduce the intensity and frequency of earthquakes, including eliminating earthquakes of magnitude 3.5 or greater by the end of 2023.
