Earthquake reinforcement begins at Wellington landmark Turnbull House

Ten years after the building closed, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga began work on upgrading the Turnbull House.

The Class 1 heritage building was closed due to the earthquake in 2012. Construction reinforcement will begin in early 2024, with a reopening of the building planned for the end of 2025.

The building, located across the road from the beehive on Boyne Street, was specially designed and constructed in 1916, with a mixture of Scottish Baronial, Queen Anne and Medieval architectural elements.

Andrew Coleman, CEO of Heritage New Zealand, said the project will breathe new life into the Turnbull House. “This project marks a new chapter, for a heritage building that is highly admired and of great importance that will benefit all New Zealanders and international visitors, when it returns as a living part of the community.”

The upgrade will install the latest earthquake-strengthening core insulators, and will also include the installation of an elevator to improve accessibility and interior renovation.
