The Government of Canada helps protect Canadians with its Earthquake Early Warning System

HORSESHOE BAY, BC, March 28, 2022 /CNW/ — Across Canada, natural disasters such as floods, landslides, wildfires and earthquakes are affecting the lives and livelihoods of thousands of Canadians.

Today, Patrick Weiler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea to Sky Country, on behalf of The Honorable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources Canada; Together with Jennifer Rice, British Columbia Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness; Mark Collins, President and CEO of BC Ferries, announced that Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has installed the first of hundreds of sensors for an Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system. This announcement at the BC Ferries terminal in Horseshoe Bay is part of a suite of initiatives being introduced by the Government of Canada to enhance the safety, security and resilience of Canada’s emergency preparedness infrastructure.

Building on NRCan’s long history as a reliable source of earthquake information for Canada, the NRC’s EEW system will provide earthquake notification through a network of sensors and alert systems for at-risk areas across the country. The EEW provides seconds to tens of seconds notice before a strong vibration begins, and warnings that can help reduce injuries, deaths, and property losses. It will be used to generate alerts for critical infrastructure, industry and the public, helping to protect people, communities, infrastructure and the environment during an event where every second counts. When the full system is available online in 2024, more than 10 million people in Canada who live in the country’s most earthquake-prone areas will receive earthquake early warning alerts, saving a few precious seconds to take action: usually to drop, cover, and catch on.

Alerts from the EEW can also be used by infrastructure safety systems to take actions automatically, such as:

Running trains to slow down

Stop traffic on bridges or tunnels

Diverting incoming air traffic

Allow surgeons to stop surgery

gas valves closed

Opening the fire pit and ambulance doors

The story continues

The EEW is part of a number of cross-departmental investments that represent the federal government’s commitment to address shared priorities under Canada’s Emergency Management Strategy (EMS). This strategy was developed in partnership with provincial and territorial governments and in consultation with various stakeholders and indigenous organizations. In the 2019 budget, the Government of Canada committed to investing $151 million over five years, with $9.2 million continuing to support federal implementation of the Emergency Management Strategy.

The Government of Canada, along with provinces, territories and indigenous partners will continue to engage and work together to enhance mitigation, preparedness and response efforts to natural disasters such as earthquakes and to ensure the safety of everyone living in vulnerable areas of Canada.

quotes

“When it comes to earthquakes, every second counts. The Earthquake Early Warning System demonstrates Canada’s commitment to responsibly managing the safety of Canadians and protecting critical infrastructure.”

His Excellency Mr. Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources

“Being in one of the most earthquake-prone areas of Canada, coastal British Columbians know that earthquake preparedness will save lives, protect key infrastructure systems, and reduce property damage. Installing an earthquake sensor here in Horseshoe Bay will provide a critical early warning site for coastal British Columbia. Our government will continue to invest in emergency preparedness initiatives such as the Earthquake Early Warning System in order to better protect Canadians and communities across the country from natural hazards.”

Patrick Wheeler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea to Sky Country

“This initiative aims to help Canadians take action to stay safe during earthquakes. Our government will continue to work with partners to prepare for natural hazards across the country and minimize impacts on the environment.”

His Excellency Mr. Stephen Gilbolt, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

“When a disaster strikes, it is critical that Canadians have the information they need to protect themselves and their loved ones. Today’s announcement represents another important step forward in our work to strengthen Canada’s public alert system, and our commitment to keeping people, families, and communities safe during emergencies.”

His Excellency Mr. Bill Blair, President of the Privy Council of Canada and Minister for Emergency Preparedness

“The possibility of a major earthquake in this region of the country is very real and makes this an ideal location for the first sensor in the national earthquake early warning network. By putting in place this early warning system, we will greatly improve our preparedness and response to earthquakes in the future.”

Jennifer Rice, British Columbia Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness

“Earthquake preparedness is an important part of our emergency response planning, given the critical role BC Ferries will play in connecting communities along the coast of British Columbia after a major earthquake. Your selection as the first early warning site for the national system reflects our commitment to safety, and we look forward to expanding the system into strategic terminal locations. others along the coast of British Columbia.”

Mark Collins, President and CEOBC Ferries

quick Facts

There are approximately 5,000 earthquakes across Canada each year. Earthquakes can destroy infrastructure, destroy buildings, cause power outages, displace communities, and even lead to deaths.

Earthquakes in Canada are most common along the Pacific coast of British Columbia and in the Yukon Territory, with about 20 percent also occurring along the Saint Lawrence River and Ottawa River valleys.

From 2024, Canadians living in seismically active areas will be able to receive emergency notification or an earthquake alert and that they must take immediate steps to protect themselves and minimize property damage.

The Canadian National Public Alert System (NPAS) is a federal, provincial and territorial system that provides emergency management organizations across Canada the ability to warn the public of impending or unfolding hazards.
