An earthquake was confirmed in the District of Columbia on Sunday, continuing busy seismic activity in South Carolina.

A 2.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Lugoff, according to the US Geological Survey. The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management said the low-magnitude quake struck at 2:27 p.m.

The quake, or aftershock, recorded at a depth of 1.9 kilometers, or about 1.1 miles, was the 17th in Palmetto since the start of the new year, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. All but one of the earthquakes were in the Midlands region.

Hours later, the USGS confirmed another earthquake in South Carolina.

At 4:05 a.m. Monday, a 0.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Dorchester County, according to the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management.

The earthquake, which the USGS said was recorded at a depth of 2.9 kilometers, is the second in the Lowcountry in 2022. On January 9, a 1.4-magnitude earthquake was confirmed near Ludson, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

This continues the recent trend of seismic activity. Prior to Sunday, the most recent incident was earlier in the month when a magnitude 2.09 earthquake was confirmed on March 11.

In all, 21 earthquakes have hit the District of Columbia since a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded on December 27, 2021, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

No major damage or injuries were reported from any of the recent earthquakes.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or less often go unnoticed and are usually only recorded by a seismograph, according to Michigan Technological University. The school said an earthquake of less than 5.5 degrees was not likely to cause significant damage.

The Geological Survey of the Supreme Committee reported earlier that it is typical for South Carolina to experience six to ten earthquakes a year. There have been 44 earthquakes in South Carolina since January 18, 2021, according to the Supreme Committee’s Department of Natural Resources.

There were at least 11 earthquakes recorded by the US Geological Survey in South Carolina in 2020.

After Sunday’s activity, 37 earthquakes have been recorded since September 27, 2021 in Palmetto State, according to the Natural Resources Department of the Higher Committee.

Of the earthquakes confirmed in South Carolina since the beginning of 2021, 33 have occurred in the Midlands region, according to data from the SCN’s Department of Natural Resources.

Scientists have been unable to explain the recent explosion.

The state previously reported that drilling and blasting in mines, seeping through the ground from lakes, or other changes in underground weight or pressure can all contribute to seismic activity, but no one has settled on the single cause of the Midlands shaking.
