Experts have warned that a Portuguese volcanic island shaken by thousands of small earthquakes could experience an eruption like Spain’s La Palma, which destroyed thousands of properties over 85 days.

The island of São Jorge, located in the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, has been hit by more than 20,000 small earthquakes, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, in the past eleven days.

The tremors could be a precursor to a powerful earthquake or volcanic eruption, which would be the first since 1808, according to scientists at the region’s CIVISA Volcanic Seismic Monitoring Center.

The elderly and those with limited mobility were evacuated from Vilas, the western region of the island where most of the seismic activity has been recorded.

Hundreds of others left the island out of fear. About 8,400 people live on the island.

“The magnitude of the earthquakes has decreased slightly … but the population must remain on alert, they should not relax,” said Eduardo Farias, head of the Civil Protection Authority of the Azores.

The sudden increase in seismic activity in São Jorge is similar to the earthquakes detected before the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted in La Palma, Spain, last year.

Experts at the Canary Islands Institute of Volcanology, which monitored the eruption of La Palma, said that about 20 million cubic meters of lava could fall into São Jorge if a volcanic eruption occurred.
