Canada’s first earthquake early warning sensor has been installed in Horseshoe Bay

Natural Resources Canada of the federal government has installed the first of hundreds of new sensors for the National Earthquake Warning System in Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.

The system will provide seconds to tens of seconds of advance warning before the ground begins to shake severely, which will help reduce injuries, deaths and property loss.

Alerts will be generated for critical infrastructure operators, industry, and the public, such as running trains to slow down, stopping traffic from driving over bridges or into tunnels, diverting incoming air traffic, allowing surgeons to stop surgery, closing gas valves, opening fire pits and ambulance doors .

For the BC Ferries terminal in Horseshoe Bay, for example, the new sensor offers ferry terminal operators some potential time to conduct evacuations or halt the process of boarding and loading vehicles.

“Earthquake preparedness is an important part of our emergency response planning, given the critical role BC Ferries will play in connecting communities along the coast of British Columbia after a major earthquake,” Mark Collins, President and CEO of BC Ferries, said in a statement.

“Your selection as the first early warning site for the national system reflects our commitment to safety, and we look forward to expanding the system to other strategic terminal sites along the British Columbia coast.”

The network of hundreds of sensors will be fully online by 2024, which will provide more than 10 million people in the country’s most earthquake-prone regions with early warning alerts. The federal government committed to the project for the first time in 2019 by providing $151 million over five years, along with $9.2 million in ongoing support for the strategy.

“Being located in the most earthquake-prone areas of Canada, they know earthquake preparedness will save lives, protect key infrastructure systems, and reduce property damage,” said Patrick Wheeler, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast riding. sea to sky.

“The installation of a seismic sensor here in Horseshoe Bay will provide an important early warning site for coastal British Columbia. Our government will continue to invest in emergency preparedness initiatives such as the Earthquake Early Warning System to better protect Canadians and communities across the country from natural hazards.”

In 2017, an engineer considered that the ferry terminals at Horseshoe Bay, Swassen, Duke Point and Departure Bay would be severely damaged or destroyed in the event of a major earthquake.

Prior to the pandemic, BC Ferries was planning an overhaul of the Horseshoe Bay terminal with a new terminal building to provide significantly improved passenger amenities and capacity, an overhaul of vehicle loading areas and road connections, the construction of a multimodal transportation hub, and new berths. In the process, the project, whose cost was then estimated to be around $250 million, would provide the station with much-needed seismic upgrades.

Within British Columbia, there are already advanced earthquake warning sensors for some critical infrastructure and schools.

For example, in 2018, the SkyTrain Canada Line control room at Bridgeport Operations and Maintenance Center was linked to Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada University’s earthquake early warning sensors, installed on the ocean floor off the west coast of Vancouver Island. This means that data transmitted from sensors can provide a warning of a major earthquake between 20 and 120 seconds, allowing trains to stop safely before the ground begins to shake or to stop at the nearest station.

And in 2020, due to the high degree of deterioration of the existing Batulu Bridge, a pre-warning sensor for earthquakes and high winds was installed on the structure. Advanced warning lights and digital bridge closure signs will alert drivers of an immediate bridge closure, and traffic control gates at bridge entrances will prevent vehicles from entering the building. A new four-lane bridge currently under construction will open in 2024 to replace the existing structure built in 1937.
