An earthquake measuring 7.0 struck eastern French New Caledonia on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, prompting tsunami warnings for some Pacific islands, which officials later said were no longer in effect.

The USGS said the quake occurred at 4.44 pm local time (0544 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), 279 kilometers (173 miles) southeast of Tadin, New Caledonia.

The US National Weather Service has issued a warning that waves less than 0.3 meters above tide level are expected along the coasts of Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia.

She later said the threat was over, and an AFP journalist said the quake had caused no damage in New Caledonia.

“Given its location, depth and size, there is no danger of a tsunami in New Caledonia,” the authorities said, while calling for residents to be vigilant.
