Withdrawing more antiperspirants for use in the cancer-causing chemical benzene

Another recall has to do with aerosol health product due to the presence of the carcinogenic chemical benzene.

A popular brand of antiperspirant has been pulled because it may contain a potentially cancer-causing chemical. It’s the latest recall involving aerosol health and beauty products in the past few months.

Unilever calls two versions of its Suave 24-hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirant. The company said an internal review found slightly elevated levels of gasoline from the propellant spraying the product out of the can.

The return affects all products listed above with expiration dates through September 2023. Sold in retail stores nationwide and online.

Benzene can cause cancer, but Unilever said that based on an independent health risk assessment, the amounts detected in recalled antiperspirant are unlikely to cause health problems. This is similar to recent recalls involving shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, and other antiperspirants.

Benzene is found in many different products that people are exposed to on a daily basis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this could include gasoline, cigarette smoke, plastics, resins, nylon and synthetic fibres. It can also be used in some types of lubricants, cleaners, and pesticides.

Anyone with recalled products is urged to dispose of them and contact Unilever at (866) 204-9756.

Those who have experienced problems with recalled products are asked to report the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.
