Fukushima Express train services resume two weeks after a major earthquake

The East Japan Railway Corporation on Saturday resumed express train services between Koriyama and Fukushima stations that were suspended in the wake of the powerful earthquake that hit northeastern Japan more than two weeks ago.

The Tohoku Shinkansen trains will operate at a reduced speed of 160 kilometers per hour between the two stations in Fukushima Prefecture and the number of services will remain at around 50% of normal, according to the company, also known as JR East. .

But with the resumption, direct Yamagata Shinkansen line services to and from Tokyo became possible. The line operated only between Fukushima and Shinju Station in Yamagata Prefecture following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake on March 16.

The earthquake, which hit the coast of Fukushima, caused a Tohoku Shinkansen express train to derail in Shiroshi, Miyagi Prefecture.

JR East hopes that the Tohoku Shinkansen services connecting Tokyo with the Northeast region will be fully operational around April 20.

It plans to resume trains between Sendai and Ichinoseki on Monday.
