Making buildings in Kangra, Champa earthquake resistant: The Tribune India

The buildings of many earthquake-prone hospitals and schools in Kangra and Champa districts will be reinforced. Kangra and Champa districts are under seismic zone 5. An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in Kangra district in 1905 caused massive destruction and killed about 20,000 people. The area is seismically active and suffers earthquakes of small magnitude almost every year.

The administrations of Kangra and Champa district are working with experts from IIT and the Teacher Training Institute in Chandigarh to survey school and hospital buildings that may need to be upgraded or strengthened to make them earthquake resistant.

Shamba University Deputy Commissioner, DC Rana says, “The buildings of 70 schools in the district are being surveyed for reinforcement to make them earthquake resistant. School buildings in the district were constructed as per the prevalent earthquake resistance code. Code adjustments The buildings of 70 schools in the Champa area are being surveyed to the latest codes Once experts have submitted their models and designs to reinforce the buildings, estimates will be sent to the Public Works Department (PWD) to make modifications to the buildings to make them earthquake resistant to reduce loss of life and property damage in case of a massive earthquake in the area.”

Kangra Deputy Commissioner Nippon Jindal says 57 hospital and school buildings have been identified in the area which may need to be strengthened to make them earthquake resistant. He adds that experts are surveying these buildings and will provide designs for reinforcements.

Experts survey the buildings of public schools and colleges in order to strengthen them, but no such exercise has been carried out for private buildings. Sources say that most of the buildings that have appeared in tourist places like McLeodganj in Kangra district do not follow the latest laws that have been notified for construction in seismically active areas.
