Watsonville Football Club Honors On The Field During First Half Of An Earthquakes Game, And Enjoys The Moment – Santa Cruz Sentinel

SAN JOSE — The Watsonville High Football Championship team took the field together for one last time on Saturday, this time on a field much larger than the one that the Wildcatz have dominated opponents throughout the 2021-22 season.

The Central Coast Division Open Division champion was one of seven high school football programs from Northern California honored at the first half of the game’s 2-2 draw with Austin FC San Jose Earthquakes. The majority of the 13,062 followers in attendance at PayPal Park praised Wildcatz’s achievement when the school was announced via the public discourse system.

“It’s fantastic, the support we’ve had from our fans,” said Wildcatz coach Roland Hedgpeth, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Friday. “I bet we have over 100 here who bought tickets for the match. That’s just a little bit. That’s a lot of support.”

The Pacific Coast League’s Gabilan (18-5-3, 8-1-1) winner Wildcatz defeated Branham of San Jose 2-1 on February 25 to claim the CCS Open Division title – the highest level in the CCS Playoffs. They did so in front of more than 1,000 fans at Del Mar High in San Jose.

They also won a pair of CIF NorCal Regional Division I matches before falling to #1 ranked Whitney in a championship match, ranked #15 in the state by maxpreps.com.

The MLS franchise began its tradition of honoring CCS and North Coast Division champions when PayPal Park opened in 2015. It was the second time Wildcatz, 12-time Division Champion, had been honored at PayPal Park and the program’s first time since 2016. They had previously been honored at a stadium Buck Show at Santa Clara University.

“It means a lot,” said striker Matteo Arias, one of the Wildcatz’s top stars this season. “I enjoy watching this game and spending time with everyone. It was a good experience to walk the field though. It was my first time ever in a professional field, so I feel really good to be appreciated by everyone here.”

18 division champions were invited to participate in the ceremony. Boys champions De La Salle (NCS DI), Redwood (NCS D-II), Piedmont (NCS D-IV) and King City (CCS D-IV and NorCal DV) and girls champions Los Altos (CCS DI) and Salinas (CCS) D -IV) were also part of the festivities.

While the majority of the teams were dressed casual, the majority of Wildcatz took to the field in their jerseys, with “Watsonville” proudly emblazoned on their chests.

“Watsonville, with all their support, deserved to be put on the map and recognized. That’s what we did,” said Lombardo Flores, who will try to play for the San Jose State team next season.

The Watsonville players took part in the game, pulling the Earthquakes and favorite player, 18-year-old forward Cady Coyle, from Ceres.

Arias and Lombardo said some of the things Wildcatz is trying to do in competition played out on the field on Saturday – but higher execution and more speed. “They’re faster in everything,” Arias said. “Being on this level, that’s crazy. Touching them is crazy.”

Austin jumped to a 2-0 lead over Maxi Orotti, a brilliant finisher in the 11th minute and a penalty by Sebastien Driussi in the 52nd minute.

Jeremy Ibobisi got the “earthquakes on the board with a penalty kick in the 70th minute and Cowell scored when he hit a loose ball in the 72nd minute to score his first goal of the season.

“He’s like our age, so he was doing a really great job,” Arias said, before Coyle scored.

Many Wildcatz dream of playing professionally. Hedgepeth said it was great for his players to see this level up close.

“I think most of them have that goal,” the coach said. “And you don’t want to take that from them.”
