Earthquakes gather late to save tie with Austin FC

Jeremy Ibobisi and Kid Coyle both scored late in the second half with a two-minute lead over the San Jose Earthquakes game to save Saturday’s 2-2 draw against visiting Austin FC.

GT Marcinkowski made two saves for Earthquakes (0-3-2, two points), who are still on the worst start in five games in the club’s history despite the point gained from the tie. San Jose 2014 and 2019 scored an all-time low of three points in their first five matches.

Maximiliano Urruti and Sebastian Driussi scored as Austin FC earned a road point for the first time in 11 games. Their 10-game losing streak included nine losses from last season and ran through August. Their last victory on the road was in June of last season.

Brad Stover saved nine saves for Austin FC (2-1-2), who scored as many goals on Saturday as he did during his 10-game losing streak. Austin FC lost 1-0 to Portland on March 12 in their only other game on the road this season.

Orruti gave Austin a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, hitting a right-footed shot from outside the penalty area after a pass from midfield by Julio Cascante.

Driosi made the score 2-0 in the 52nd minute, converted from a penalty kick after Daniel Pereira’s mistake by Jackson Yoel of San Jose.

The Earthquakes Rally started in the 70th minute when Ibobisi took a penalty after Osini Boda’s foul in the penalty area. In the 72nd minute, Coyle tied the score 2-all when he found a loose ball on the edge of the 6-yard box after a corner kick from San Jose and fired a shot past Stuver.

San Jose striker Javier “Choves” Lopez, who led the team with 12 goals last season and has one goal in three games this season, has missed his second game in a row with a thigh injury.
