Scientists are still learning from the Ghanaian earthquake nearly two years later

Geologists who have been studying the earthquake that destroyed hundreds of structures in the northwest corner of the state nearly two years ago say it was stranger than anyone initially realized.

Paula Figueiredo, a postdoctoral research assistant at North Carolina State University, is lead author of a new study on the earthquake site.

Using images from drones and radar, scientists have found something that had never been documented before on the East Coast – the earthquake caused a rupture in the surface. It was more than a mile long.

“No one expected a magnitude five earthquake to actually break the Earth’s surface. Generally, these earthquakes don’t reach the surface. So we don’t actually see the direct effects of surface faults when those earthquakes happen,” Figueiredo said.

The rupture, a previously unknown fault line, twisted roads and created rolling areas averaging a few inches in height along them.

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake, on August 9, 2020, was the strongest in the state in more than a century, and in Ghanaian province, at least 100 homes are believed to have been damaged – many with cracked foundations. The earthquake was felt in neighboring states including Virginia, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The National Weather Service said a 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in 1916 near Skyland.

Days later, specialists from the University of Memphis traveled to North Carolina to monitor the aftershocks.

The University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, with help from North Carolina and US Geological Survey officials, has deployed four portable seismograph stations in a tightly controlled pattern to record aftershocks.

At least 12 aftershocks were recorded near Sparta in the province of Ghana. A magnitude 2.9 aftershock shook the town two days after the quake while Governor Roy Cooper was touring the city.

The university said eight small tremors have been identified.
