Italy remembers the victims of the L’Aquila earthquake on its thirteenth anniversary

L’Aquila holds a torch relay to mark the 13th anniversary of the earthquake.

Italy celebrates the thirteenth anniversary of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the city of L’Aquila in the early hours of April 6, 2009, killing 309 people, leaving 70,000 homeless and destroying more than 50 villages in the central Abruzzo region.

On Tuesday night, residents of L’Aquila held a traditional torch procession through the city’s streets, after severe restrictions imposed by Italy led to the cancellation of the solemn event over the past two years.

A midnight mass for the victims was celebrated and a huge blue beam of light was projected into the sky from the center of the Piazza Duomo for the third year in a row.

At exactly 03.32, church bells rang 309 times, once for every person who died under the rubble.

Reconstruction of buildings in L’Aquila is still in progress, 13 years after the city was destroyed by a deadly earthquake.

Last May, Rome’s MAXXI Museum of 21st Century Art opened a new contemporary art museum in L’Aquila, in the renovated Palazzo Ardinghelli.

In September last year, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi opened a memorial park in L’Aquila, paying tribute to the victims who died in the earthquake as “309 angels”.
