The number of safety towers from the tsunami in Japan increased to 502

TOKYO – A total of 502 tsunami safety towers were constructed in Tokyo and 22 other prefectures as of April last year, an 11-fold increase in the number that existed before the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, according to a Cabinet Office survey.

The government subsidizes half the costs of building the towers, which provide temporary shelter to residents in the event of a tsunami, but the burden on local governments still runs into several hundreds of millions of yen. A study by Gunma University found that only 45 such towers existed before the disaster.

In 2014, support was increased by two-thirds in areas where significant damage was expected from the Nankai Tro earthquake, helping to speed up construction of the tower. Seventy percent of the towers are located on the Pacific side west of the Kanto region, with Shizuoka Prefecture having more than 139 towers.

Progress is also being made in identifying taller buildings as tsunami shelters. A total of 15,304 buildings were registered in 37 counties for these purposes, eight times more than before the 1876 disaster.

Local governments have called for increased government subsidies for the costs of building towers outside the Nankai Tru earthquake area.

The Liberal Democratic Party plans to introduce a bill that would increase support by two-thirds in areas expected to be hit by a massive earthquake centered in the Japan Trench and the Chishima Trench. Aim to pass it on at your current diet session.
