A seismometer will soon be installed at the Pangasinan Provincial Capitol – Manila Bulletin

Lingyin – Pangasinan will soon have its own earthquake intensity scale.

Pangasinan Provincial Council in its online session on April 4 approved a decision authorizing Governor Amado Espino III to enter and sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST) -PHIVOLCS) for the seismometer installation.

In a decision authored by Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Jerome Vic O. Espino, DOST-PHIVOLCS intends to place earthquake intensity meters in strategic locations in key areas of the province to monitor and obtain faster and accurate readings of the tremors.

“Nine units of seismic intensity meters will be located in pre-designated areas of the province to include one in Lingayen, Pangasinan which will be installed within the premises of the Provincial Capitol,” the resolution read.

“An earthquake intensity meter consists of an accelerometer, an internet-based data transmission system, and an uninterruptible power supply that can numerically assess the earthquake-related ground shaking intensity in the area around the seismic sensor on an almost real-time basis.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan fully supports the DOST-PHIVOLCS project as a tool for seismologists to issue faster landslide and tsunami alerts, saving lives and property in the event of a strong earthquake.

Earthquakes happen every day and can occur anywhere, whether in the edges of tectonic plates or in the interior. Pangasinan Island was hit by one of the strongest earthquakes in the Philippines, when it struck the island of Luzon with a magnitude of 7.7 on July 16, 1990, the center of which was the town of Rizal in Nueva Ecija near the city of Cabanatuan.

More than 1,000 people were killed. The massive earthquake wreaked havoc on much of Luzon, the country’s largest island, with Baguio City suffering the most devastating.

The installation of seismic intensity meters here will greatly contribute to the development of the earthquake monitoring capacity of DOST-PHIVOLCS.

DOST-PHIVOLCS will be represented by Under Secretary Renato U Solidum, Jr. at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.
